Recently, an Egremont resident asked what happens to the plastics the Town collects for recycling. So what happens? The collected plastics are trucked to the Springfield Materials Recycling Facility (MRF), where the plastics are sorted into categories and types and sold to commodity buyers who process the plastics further for manufacturers to turn the waste into new products.
The short MRF video on "What Happens to Your Recycled Materials" lets you witness the process for plastics and other items you recycle. It also shows how centers like MRF employ robotics and optical sensors using artificial intelligence to pull out the good stuff.
For more videos on recycling containers, paper, and the unwanted, visit the MRF website here. You can watch it on the page or MRF's YouTube channel.
