Egremont voters defeated Southern Berkshire and Berkshire Hills Regional School District's proposed merger this morning at their Special Town Meeting. The vote was 78 for the merger and 143 against the merger.
According to the RSDPB, all 8 towns (Sheffield, Great Barrington, Monterey, Stockbridge, West Stockbridge, New Marlborough, Alford, and Egrement) had to approve the proposed regional agreement. With Egremont's vote, this particular proposed agreement is defeated.
It remains important for the other 7 towns to proceed with their discussion and votes on the proposed agreement. Their actions, along with Egremont's, will inform the RSDPB if there are any next steps to take.
