Update on Virtual Public Meetings
On February 12, 2022, Governor Baker signed Chapter 22 of the Acts of 2022, which extends the authority for remote participation for all public bodies through July 14, 2022.
Also, under the current law, the extension of entirely virtual Town Meetings and the COVID-19 provisions related to quorum requirements will expire on July 15, 2022.
Once the extension expires, the current statute allows 49% of the Board/Committee/Commission to meet remotely, along with 100% of the staff and public. The person chairing the meeting (this does not have to be THE Chair, just the person acting as Chair) and a majority of the Board/Committee/Commission must be in person.
In terms of legislative action, Senate budget Section 133 (Filed by Sen. Brownsberger) would extend all COVID-19 provisions until December 15, 2023. The Senator's bill is now in the conference committee, so while there is a possibility that the extension would be implemented, it is not a guarantee.
